Mankind was so mystified with the bird wing they missed the whole principle of what we might consider here, for want of a better term, "the loft" or, in some kind of imaginary Germanesque terminology, luftenschreight. It's still something we don't understand fully.

Click here to see one of the articles in the mathematics section about what I call "Aeronautic Estende".  The brothers had an aircraft with enough estende to glide in an Outer Banks Kityhawk strong onshore wind even though weighed down with the engine.  People do that to this day with hang gliders designed by Da Vinci, but with far greater success.
