Art School Nine
Beginning Color Schemes
Begin by working with only five colors using a piece of paper toned down from white, sort of a light neutral
gray. In this series of exercises, you should be trying to explore achieving a harmony of your colors in how they are used in the work. In addition to that, you should try to reach a balance. Above all the work should show this. Make it the main part of the exercise.
A picture of distance. Do you not have two eyes, you who do? Yet your eyes are pointed the same way. You with your eyes on the side, you get a picture of survival. Distance is the synapse between two pictures. Colors have no name. They just are.
It's as Corot said: "We don't see the same way. You see green and I see gray and blond. Work at values, for that is the basis of everything, and in whatever way one might feel and express oneself, one cannot do good painting without it.
I recommend to you the greatest naiveté in study. and do precisely what you see. Confidence in yourself and the motto: integrity and confidence."
Forms as flat surfaces offset by deep shadows. Ingresque.
Beware an "over assurance". Nervousness is an indication of a flexibility. Beware of emotional outbursts and lack of self-control.
