Tenant Creek After Midnight

by Paul Hall, 20th of April, 1986, Tenant Creek, Australia.

A dog howls in the distance.

A chill is in the air.

Tenant Creek is silent.

A curious affair.

A road train has come roaring past,

three trailers are in tow.

Two busses, one to south, one north

takes who had to go.

A dog and cat, they cross the road

infinitesimally slow.

A truck with pipes rolls past to north.

Too fast it goes to know

that in the midnight's distance

the local roosters crow.

The baker's busy baking,

car dealer's got no glass

in his showroom windows

as prime movers hustle past.

Main street's the Stuart Highway

although you wouldn't know.

When it hits town it's four lanes wide,

not just a two lane road.
