Nude in the Embrace of a Kindly Rainstorm

Nude in the Embrace of a Kindly Rain Storm

1965, Oil on Canvass

The Greenwich Village Period

She is sitting on a chair in the art class somewhere in the School of Visual Arts on Twenty-Third Street and Seventh Avenue in downtown Manhattan in New York City.  But that's it.  As soon as I've painted her, my attention can once again turn to the world around her.  Why should I show how clever I am by representing the objects around her in that classroom.  You would have seen other students buisy at work.  Acutraments of the art class all around and some relics of the dentistry school that building used to house.  Before the artists moved in.

I guess it would have been kind of interesting.  A slice of history.  After all, the School of Visual arts has burgeoned to become quite something in the contempory art world.  Maybe I had "Dejuner Sur L'herb" by Mannet on the back of my mind.  But since art school always seemed to have this sort of preoccupation with the nude human form, I thought at the time, I could just go ahead with my own work and put her in a world of an abstract expressionist landscape.

After all she took up so little of the entire picture area.  I did this a lot when we were doing piantings of the nude in classes.  English Girl, Planet of Flowers, Premonition of the Handicap Beauty.

I could have done hundreds, but time ran out.  There were other things to do for a while.  For about twenty years.  Or who knows how long.
